Deep Brain Stimulation Program

The Vanderbilt Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program treats neurological conditions such as dystonia, essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. DBS uses electrical stimulation to help control abnormal signals in the brain. DBS is not a cure. However, it has been proven to reduce the stiffness, slowed movement, tremors and walking difficulties that come with movement disorders. DBS may help even if medication hasn’t, and if your symptoms are interfering with your quality of life.

Deep Brain Stimulation: Why Choose Vanderbilt

  • Experienced doctors: Our board certified neurologists and neurosurgeons have extensive experience. They have successfully provided DBS in more than 1,000 cases in 25 years, for patients in all stages of their disease. Vanderbilt is a national leader in using this elective procedure to treat movement disorders.
  • A team approach: Successful treatment and management of movement disorders requires bringing together the knowledge and skills of specialists in a variety of areas. That’s why our neurosurgeons work with specialists in movement disorders, neuropsychology and physical therapy. They take a comprehensive approach to your care.
  • Personalized care: Our program coordinator will guide you through every step of the experience. The nurse case manager can answer any questions about medications, discuss follow-up care, connect you with support groups and provide educational resources. Together, the team will work to create a treatment plan specifically designed for you.
  • Recognized care: In addition to our status as a national leader in using DBS to treat movement disorders, we’re also recognized as a national Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence. Each year, we treat more than 100 patients who have Parkinson’s disease — using DBS to provide relief from their symptoms.
  • Clinical trials: As part of an academic medical center, we are part of clinical trials that research new treatments for movement disorders. You can talk with our doctors about whether there is a clinical trial that’s right for you.
  • A responsive team: You can use our secure online portal, My Health at Vanderbilt, to message your care team 24/7.
