General surgery is a surgical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the digestive system and the organs and tissues inside the abdomen and the abdominal wall.
Vanderbilt General Surgery offers the latest surgical procedures, from minimally invasive techniques to more complex surgeries, to treat a range of conditions and diseases. Our care team provides you with expert, compassionate care focused on your individual needs.
Tests We Offer
Our team may need to perform one or more diagnostic tests, which may include:
- Lymph node biopsy
- Muscle biopsy
Treatments We Offer
We offer the full range of surgical techniques including:
- Endoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive technique does not involve any incisions. Rather, it is performed with a scope inserted through the mouth. Since there are no incisions, these techniques require almost no pain medication and allows the patient to recuperate faster.
- Laparoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive technique involves small incisions to insert a camera into the abdomen. It allows the patient to recover faster with less pain.
- Robotic surgery. This minimally invasive technique offers all of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery. Certain operations that cannot be performed laparoscopically may be available robotically.
- Open surgery. An open surgery means the cutting of skin and tissues so that the surgeon has a full view of the structures or organs involved.
