Electroconvulsive Therapy and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
We offer alternative treatments for a range of behavioral health conditions for which medication or psychotherapy have not been effective. These treatments, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), use different methods to directly stimulate the brain. These therapies are safe and effective and are provided as outpatient or inpatient treatments based on your needs. Our team combines advanced technology with personalized care to create a care plan that is right for you.

Why Choose Electroconvulsive Therapy and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at Vanderbilt
- Knowledge and experience
Our program has provided electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for more than a decade and has helped many patients for whom previous therapies have not worked. ECT is one of the oldest, safest and most effective treatments for severe depression and other mental health disorders. Our behavioral health specialists have extensive experience with ECT and have published studies showing our expertise in these treatments.
- Unique services
We are one of few providers in the Southeast offering these alternative behavioral health treatments. These treatments offer safe, effective alternatives for patients who have not responded to other forms of treatment—and a seamless transition between our inpatient and outpatient services.
- Convenient care
We perform transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) quickly in an outpatient setting. Treatments are typically 5 days per week for 6 weeks. TMS does not require anesthesia and has only minor side effects. In fact, patients often receive treatments before or after work—or even during lunch breaks—and then resume their normal daily activity.
- Advanced care
As part of an academic medical center, we are leaders in caring for the most complex conditions. Our commitment to research means that you receive the most current, advanced treatment available.
