I was seen first by an intern who was very inquisitive however when the doctor came in he. Over swiftly towards diagnosis and prescribed medicinal treatment. He did answer all of my questions, however since this was a brand new diagnosis for me I faced the pedagogical issue of not knowing what I don't know, therefore requiring me to ask questions and not anticipating anything was extremely suboptimal. He did not discuss with me the impact this diagnosis had on my life long term, any impact on my desired activity level (I'm a committed runner) and nothing about potential side effects of the medicine other than explaining the potential for mouth sores and therefore the need for folic acid (which wasn't prescribed and I had to pay out of pocket to secure that medicine). He also didn't talk about that this is a chronic disease - only that I would be on it for 15 months or so and I found out through research on my own that it was/ is a lifelong diagnosis which is traumatic for someone like me who is healthy and exercises regularly. I still feel like, even after researching in my own, that I should have received some sort of medical counseling about the impact this will have on my life. Will the medicine prevent future flair ups? Can we reduce the dose after X months and positive results? What alternative treatments are there and what are the benefits of those? What would trigger looking for alternatives? Are there lifestyle changes that I should/ need to make as a result of the diagnosis? Is there a possibility of a misdiagnosis and how would we know that? All things considered I'm going to a non-Vanderbilt doctor for a second opinion and follow on care because of this experience.

The best specialty practitioners are scientist and human support simultaneously. For such a serious appointment and scary diagnosis, I could not have had better service.
