Chemotherapy, given orally or through a vein, uses powerful drugs to destroy cancer cells in the body. If chemotherapy is part of your treatment plan, we will work with you to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

We offer multiple infusion centers for your convenience. Our staff members are warm and knowledgeable and give you the personal attention you need during your treatment.

Chemotherapy: Why Choose Vanderbilt-Ingram

At Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, we offer chemotherapy in an environment of care and comfort:

  • Convenience: We have multiple infusion centers, so you can find a location close to you. We offer some evening hours, making it easy to fit your chemotherapy sessions around your schedule.
  • Outpatient care: Chemotherapy does not typically require a hospital stay. You get the advanced care you need at our infusion centers, then return to the comfort of your home when you are finished.
  • Specialized technology: We find the right type of chemotherapy medication that will be most effective for you. We also provide regional therapy, which delivers the chemotherapy directly to the affected area. Regional therapy usually results in fewer side effects. Your doctor will discuss with you if regional therapy is an appropriate treatment option for you.
  • Dedicated staff: Our nurses have dedicated their careers to helping patients have a safe and comfortable chemotherapy experience. They are experts at helping people manage the side effects of chemotherapy, giving each person individualized attention. Often, patients work with the same nurse at each visit.
  • Team approach: At Vanderbilt-Ingram, some of the nation’s leading cancer experts across medical disciplines collaborate to develop a treatment plan for you. Our patients benefit from the expertise of many different cancer experts, working together to get you the best possible result.

Chemotherapy at Vanderbilt-Ingram’s Midtown Nashville Campus

Chemotherapy is a common treatment for many different types of cancer. We designed a comfortable, healing environment for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Features of the infusion center at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Midtown Nashville location include:

  • Private rooms: We offer access to private rooms, so you can have guests join you during your treatment. Each room has a television, plus lighting and temperature control for your comfort.
  • Discretion combined with quick access to nurses: The unique “pod” design gives you everything you need. Each pod affords privacy to individual patients while facing the central nursing station. This design means that we can quickly respond to you when you need us, while assuring your privacy.
  • Clinical trials: There is a separate, dedicated space for patients undergoing clinical trials at our infusion center. Nurses with training and experience in that particular specialty staff the clinical trial rooms. Learn more about our clinical trials.

Other Cancer Treatments and Services

Just as every patient is unique, so is each cancer treatment plan. We find the treatment solution that is best for your specific condition and needs.

Chemotherapy may be the only treatment you need, or we may combine it with other treatment methods such as surgery and radiation therapy. For example, you may have chemotherapy before a surgical procedure to shrink the tumor, making it easier to remove. Your medical oncologist, surgeon and radiation therapist will work together to create your personalized treatment plan.

Chemotherapy is only one form of medical oncology used to destroy cancer cells. Other therapies that can be given orally or through a vein, include:

  • Hormone therapy: Medications to stop or slow the growth of certain cancers that need hormones to grow
  • Targeted therapy: Drugs and substances that target specific molecules on the cancer cells to stop the growth of the cells

These therapies may cause unpleasant side effects, but our team will give you strategies to prevent and manage these symptoms so you feel your best.
