Volunteer at Vanderbilt / College / Short-Term Summer College

Short-Term Summer College

The application opportunity for the Summer 2019 session is now closed.  Please visit our website after 10:00am on Monday, February 3rd to apply for the Summer 2020 session.

Our Summer Short-Term College Volunteer program is designed for college students who live locally and attend college out of the middle Tennessee region. If you will be available to volunteer for on a weekly basis between June and August, this program is for you. We have a limited number of these short-term openings, so they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you attend college in Middle Tennessee and will be here this summer, please apply to our Year-Round Program.

  • The number of these short-term openings are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. We accept applications beginning the first business day of February until the middle of March.
  • Because of the limited amount of time available to you for volunteering in the summer, your school year should end prior to May 15.
  • Positions available are subject to change, but generally include:
Guest Ambassador: Help patients and families who need assistance. Meet, greet and escort patients and visitors around the hospital and/or clinic during their stay/visit.  FIrst point of contact to help provide a comforting presence.  This position is available in multiple areas/units.
Activity Cart: Hand out toiletries, puzzles, activity packets, games, magazines and other items to families in various waiting rooms. Visit with families and offer directions and general hospital information
  • Summer short term volunteers will need to be available for the summer months (June through August) and are asked to complete a minimum of 25 hours of volunteering (1 day a week for 2-3 hours). If you have limited availability in your schedule to complete our training requirements and/or a weekly shift, or will be out of town for a majority of the summer, this program might not fit your needs.  If you won't be back in Nashville until after May 15, there will not be enough time to complete the onboarding requirements.
  • Summer short term volunteers are not required to attend an Information Session, but will need to complete a personal interview.
  • Proof of required immunizations must be submitted to our Occupational Health Clinic before you can begin volunteering. Required immunizations are: 2 TB Skin Tests; MMR (measles, mumps & rubella); two MMR vaccines one month apart (if you have documentation of two MMR vaccines since 12 months of age the requirement has been met); and, Varicella Titer (lab report showing positive results or 2 Varivax Vaccines (given at least 4 weeks apart). Documentation of disease cannot be accepted.
  • Summer short-term volunteers will also be required to complete an online orientation, background check, unit-specific training, and shadow a current volunteer.
