Adult Spinal Deformity Program

Vanderbilt’s Spinal Deformity program cares for adults with deformities involving all areas of the spine. Demand for these services has grown as the prevalence of spinal deformity has increased. Older adults are less willing to tolerate to the disability associated with adult spinal deformity. Our goal is to reduce pain, increase physical functional ability, and, when appropriate, restore normal spinal alignment. Our services include physical therapy, injections, medications, and even specialized surgeries for even the most complex cases.

Adult Spinal Deformity Program: Why Choose Vanderbilt

  • Specialized team. Our streamlined team, from OR technicians to anesthesiologists to floor nurses, specialize in spine care. Our surgeons have the fellowship training and expertise to handle everything from the more common surgeries to the most complex. This includes addressing problems left or caused by prior surgeries.
  • Collaborative team. For the most complex cases, we have two experienced surgeons lead the case together. This collaboration reduces OR time, blood loss, and complications as well as enhances recovery time.
  • Personalized care. Surgeons, physiatrists, pain management specialists, physical therapists, and other specialists on our team work together to provide the treatment options that are right for you.
  • A full range of care. We treat each case differently. We know surgery isn’t right for everyone. We offer a wide range of non-surgical treatment options including physical therapy, medications and injections.
  • Long-term follow-up. Unlike any other spine center in the region, the Vanderbilt Spine Center carefully tracks how our patients are doing, years after surgery. We use this information to improve how we care for patients every day.
  • Superior outcomes. On average, our patients report significant improvements in pain, general health and quality of life after treatment.
  • Second Opinions – At the Vanderbilt Adult Spinal Deformity Center, we routinely provide second opinions to patients both locally and across the country. Feel free to reach out to us directly to initiate this process. We make it a priority to see second surgical opinions as quickly as possible.
