Don’t Miss a Beat: A Better Way to Treat Cardiac Arrhythmias

Between 3 and 6 million Americans have a cardiac arrhythmia—and the rate of those dealing with an irregular heartbeat is increasing. While older adults are more likely to be diagnosed with such a condition, younger adults can be at risk as well, and some types of arrhythmias are becoming more common in both groups.

An irregular heartbeat can occur without signs or symptoms, but it can also lead to life-threatening complications such as blood clots, stroke and heart failure.

Effective, proactive treatment is critical.

MyHeartHealth combines Vanderbilt’s world-class medical care with a reimagined approach that coordinates and “bundles” all the services needed for patients recently diagnosed with certain types of cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AFib or AF), atrial flutter (Aflutter), and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Patients diagnosed with these arrhythmias within the past two years are good candidates for the bundle, unless they are also managing conditions such as a history of stroke, a heart transplant, advanced heart failure or are on dialysis.

This bundle includes two electrophysiology (EP) procedures—catheter ablation and left atrial appendage closure. The primary goal of MyHeartHealth is to proactively address arrhythmias to avoid adverse and costly health care episodes.

Exceptional Care. Better Experience. Lower Costs.

With MyHeartHealth, you benefit from:

Sound decisions—Only patients who can truly benefit from an EP procedure will continue with the MyHeartHealth bundle. Patients who don’t qualify clinically will exit the bundle and continue to be medically managed.

No surprise billing—Our bundle offers predictable expenses for you and your employees. Everything is covered in a single price, even in the event of repeat ablations, which unfortunately can be necessary and create additional costs for you as an employer.

Concierge treatment—Our patient navigators will help your employees manage their care at every step of the process.

Peace of mind—An irregular heartbeat can be stressful. Our team helps your employees objectively evaluate treatment options while also creating peace of mind for them post-procedure by offering remote monitoring devices that confirm their heart is beating regularly. We quickly connect patients back to care if there are concerns.

Exceptional results—We have a proven track record for effectively addressing cardiac arrhythmias. Our procedures significantly outperform drug therapy.

How It Works

  • An interested candidate speaks with one of our patient navigators, who confirms eligibility, explains the process and collects required information.
  • Once administrative eligibility has been confirmed, the patient will be scheduled for a consult to determine clinical eligibility.
  • If the individual is determined to be a good candidate for either a catheter ablation or left atrial appendage closure, he or she will proceed in the bundle. If neither procedure is deemed appropriate, the bundle will conclude for the patient.
  • Patients who are scheduled for a procedure will receive pre-procedure education to help them prepare. This includes a home monitoring kit they will use after their procedure to monitor their heartbeat.
  • Typically, patients will be discharged from the hospital the same day of their procedure. A small number (less than 20%) will require an overnight stay.
  • Following the procedure, we provide monitoring and bundle coverage for nine months for catheter ablations and a full year for left atrial appendages to ensure a successful road to recovery. This includes regular check ins, and in few cases, a repeat procedure.

Why Vanderbilt?

Clinical excellence—Vanderbilt is a national leader in all areas of electrophysiology: atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, left atrial appendage management, device implantation and device extraction. Our patients experience lower rates of emergency department visits and repeat ablations compared to the market average.

Team approach—We work together to ensure each patient receives comprehensive care. Our team members collaborate with each other, as well as with experts in other medical disciplines, to provide everyone with care that addresses their unique needs.

Innovation—At Vanderbilt, patients have access to advanced treatments before they are widely available. We have worked with medical device makers to bring new treatments for cardiac arrhythmias to Vanderbilt. Our doctors have helped develop new surgical techniques for closing the heart’s left atrial appendage, reducing stroke risk for certain patients with atrial fibrillation.
