Lipid Clinic

If you have high cholesterol, it may be a result of a common inherited disorder called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). If you have this condition, it is important to seek treatment so you can lower your lipids (cholesterol) to a safe range and reduce your risk of heart attack.

Vanderbilt is the only hospital in the region offering a dedicated lipid clinic that provides advanced care to patients with FH.

We also specialize in managing other common lipid problems associated with increased cardiovascular risk, including elevated blood triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia), low levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a).

Lipid Clinic: Expert Care for High Cholesterol at Vanderbilt

At our clinic, you will receive care from experienced lipid specialists. Our team members have a unique expertise in treating patients with genetically high cholesterol. The Lipid Clinic offers specialized care and personalized treatment plans for people with FH. We offer:

  • Only lipid clinic in the region: Vanderbilt is a destination for people seeking treatment for high cholesterol. It is the only place in the region with a specialty focus on FH.
  • Convenient location: Our Lipid Clinic is located at One Hundred Oaks, giving you easy access to expert, specialized care.
  • Multidisciplinary team: Our team includes cardiologists, adult and pediatric endocrinologists, nurse practitioners and a nutritionist experienced in dietary counseling.
  • Latest thinking and treatment: Our lipid specialists actively participate in research and regularly publish new findings about managing high cholesterol, particularly FH.
  • Participation in a national registry: FH is a genetic condition, which means children can easily inherit it. We are helping to build a secure national registry of people with FH that allows others to find out if they are at risk and seek appropriate treatment.
  • Treatment recommendations: We emphasize the importance of both lifestyle changes and the appropriate use of lipid-lowering medications to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Diagnosing and Treating Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Familial hypercholesterolemia is genetic. If you have a first-degree relative (a parent or sibling) with FH, you have a 50/50 chance of having it yourself. FH is characterized by:

  • For adults: An LDL (“bad”) cholesterol reading of 180 mg/dL or more
  • For children: An LDL level of 150 mg/dL or more

Too much LDL cholesterol in your blood causes plaque to form on your artery walls, which can lead to heart attacks. People with FH have an abundance of LDL cholesterol (far above the normal range) and are at a higher risk of a heart attack, even if they are younger.

The good news is that we can quickly diagnose FH through a simple blood test. If a child has a relative with FH, we will screen as early as 2 years old. Early detection results in more successful treatment.

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with FH, medical management is the typical course of treatment. A lipid specialist will monitor you closely to ensure your ongoing health and well-being.
