Vanderbilt Midwifery and Women’s Primary Care provides personalized care for women, by women. We’re a nurse-led practice offering services similar to those provided by OB-GYNs, including well woman exams, pap smears and diagnostic testing. Our holistic approach to care sets us apart.
The Vanderbilt Certified Nurse-Midwives are specially-trained to guide women through natural or low-intervention childbirth. Certified nurse midwife Amanda Perry discusses how women can get a back-to-basics birthing experience that’s scientifically proven to yield better outcomes for mom and baby.

Midwifery and Women’s Primary Care: Why Choose Vanderbilt
Experienced specialists: Our certified nurse midwives (CNMs) are registered nurses who have also earned a Master of Science in Nursing and a specialty in midwifery. With deep experience in midwifery, they deliver outstanding care to women at every stage of life.
A team approach: Our midwives are often the only women’s health provider for their patients. However, if your symptoms or diagnosis requires specialized treatment, we work closely with Vanderbilt Health physicians to manage your care. This includes going to high-risk pregnancy appointments with you to ensure you understand everything and, if needed, to help make decisions.
Personalized care: From planning for a particular type of birth to managing menopause symptoms, our midwives spend a lot time one-on-one with you. They listen to your concerns; explain options; provide childbirth, lactation and breastfeeding education; and, when needed, they’re known to be wonderful hand-holders.
Proven outcomes: When it comes to delivering your baby, safety is the top concern. Our certified nurse midwives and women’s primary care nurse practitioners have a proven record of keeping moms and their babies safe for more than 24 years. For 2018 we reported:
