Adult (Acquired) Heart Disease Program

Disease can weaken the heart until it no longer pumps with enough force or steadiness of rhythm to circulate blood throughout the body. Even a partially damaged heart can lead to unhealthy side effects. For instance, large amounts of fluid can accumulate in the body, forcing the heart to work harder to do its job.  This can lead to enlargement of the heart.

Your doctor may treat some types of heart disease with non-surgical procedures such as balloon angioplasty and balloon valvuloplasty. However, depending on the type and severity of the disease, surgery may be the best option for improving your health. The surgical procedures we perform to treat adult heart disease target specific disease sites. We design your treatment plan for your individual needs. We provide the following types of surgical treatment for adult heart disease:

  • Coronary Revascularization: to replace or repair arteries that have become blocked or damaged due to disease. Revascularization procedures restore healthy blood flow to the heart.

  • Valve Repair and Replacement: to keep blood cycling through the heart rather than leaking backward.  Click here to learn more.

  • Ventricular Failure Surgery - There are 3 different types:
  1. Left ventricular aneurysm repair-- to strengthen weakened walls of a chamber of the heart

  2. Ventricular assist device therapy support-- to assist the weakened heart muscle so the heart beats with enough force to maintain healthy blood circulation

  3. Heart transplantation-- surgery for end-stage heart disease
  • Congenital Heart Repair: for heart disease that has been present from birth but that has only become life-threatening during adulthood

  • Arrhythmia Repair (Maze procedure, including ablation): to alter patterns of irregular heartbeat that disrupt normal blood circulation and cause distress

  • Aortic Aneurysm Repair (ascending and descending): to strengthen the major conduit of blood throughout the body

  • Re-operative Heart Surgery
