Image-guided breast biopsies

Overview

When clinical or imaging findings suggest the possibility of cancer, a biopsy is usually recommended. An ultrasound-guided core biopsy is a procedure that uses ultrasound (sound waves) to locate a specific area of interest in the breast so that tissue samples can be removed for testing through a small needle.

Image-guided biopsies avoid the scarring associated with surgical biopsies and can be done as an outpatient procedure using local anesthetic. These biopsies can be performed using ultrasound, MRI or mammographic (stereotactic) guidance, depending on which modality offers best imaging of the area of concern.
