Building on the shoulders of greatness perfectly describes the history of ophthalmology at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt has a rich tradition of ophthalmic care and research — dating back to our program's first chairman Dr. Giles Savage, and moving forward through such greats in the fields of research and patient care as Dr. James Elliott, Dr. Denis O'Day, and Dr. J. Donald Gass.
Collaboration has a longstanding tradition at Vanderbilt and defines the character of our research efforts at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute. Discovery, Patient Care, and Training are the building blocks and foundation of Vanderbilt Ophthalmology and I plan to continue to build on that tradition as I move into my fifth year as Chair of the ophthalmology program here.
