Herpes Virus (HSV)
The term Herpes Virus refers to the family of herpes viruses that includes:
Herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are 2 types of herpes simplex. HSV Type 1 (HSV-1) usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth. HSV Type 2 (HSV-2) typically causes genital herpes.
Varicella-zoster virus. This is the virus responsible for causing chickenpox and shingles. It sometimes causes encephalitis in adults and children, but when it does it's mild.
Epstein-Barr virus. This type of herpes causes infectious mononucleosis (mono). If encephalitis develops as a result of the Epstein-Barr virus, it tends to be mild.
