Other Illnesses from Insects

Other Illnesses from Insects include Japanese Encephalitis which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Transmission occurs in Asia in rural agricultural settings. Risk is rare for travelers who confine their travel to urban areas and very low for short-term rural travelers. There is a vaccine available for travelers who may be at risk.

Japanese Encephalitis Symptoms:

  • Fever with headache (for milder infections)

More severe infections produce symptoms such as:

  • Quick onset, headache
  • High fever
  • Neck stiffness
  • Confusion, lack of coordination
  • Coma
  • Tremors or occasional convulsions (especially in infants)
