Stroke Symposium Information
Course Format and Description
This annual review of stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation is designed to
provide the most current information on the diagnosis and medical management of
stroke for primary care physician, internist, cardiologist, neurologists, EMTs, nurses,
case managers and rehabilitation therapists. It will feature sessions focusing on emergency management, secondary stroke prevention, post-stroke symptom management
and neuro-rehabilitation.
Statement of Educational Need
The need for education in the areas of stroke prevention, treating stroke and poststroke
conditions (such as spasticity, swallowing dysfunction, bowel and bladder
control) is significant. Each of these areas has seen rapid advancement in better understanding of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment. Additionally, healthcare reform
coding and reimbursement for physician services is likely to evolve significantly under
the new federal administration.
Purpose and Target Audience
The target audiences for this symposium are primary care physicians, internists,
cardiologists, neurologists, EMTs, nurses, case managers, and rehabilitation therapists
interested in the care of patients and their families affected by stroke and related neurological disorders and conditions.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to describe and
discuss:
• Triage and ED management of stroke patients
• Secondary stroke prevention measures
• Use of thrombolytic and other revascularization therapies
• Recognition and appropriate management of stroke related processes

Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

If you must cancel your registration for this course, the Vanderbilt Department of
Neurology will refund your registration fee less a $75 administrative fee, provided you
notify us by November 1, 2009. No refunds will be made after that date. Exceptions will
be made for justifiable emergencies.
Registration may be transferred to another person or to another course date. In the
event of cancellation or rescheduling of this MCE activity due to unforeseen circumstances,
Vanderbilt University will refund your registration fees in full.
