Meet Our Team


Howard Kirshner, MD, a Vanderbilt neurologist for more than 25 years, leads the division. His practice runs the gamut, from prevention to acute stroke care through rehabilitation. In addition, he leads several on-going NIH or pharmaceutical company-sponsored clinical research studies. Dr. Kirshner also has an interest in neurobehavioral disorders and dementia.

Michael Ayad, PhD. M.D. interventional neurosurgeon, with expertise in management of cerebral aneurysms.

John J. "Buddy" Connors, III, M.D. interventional neuroradiologist.

Adrian Jarquin-Valdivia, MD, RDMS, specializes in caring for stroke patients in the critical care setting. Dr. Jarquin-Valdivia is also involved in research related to medical ultrasound, transcranial Doppler testing, and near-infrared spectroscopy.

BethAnn McLaughlin, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology whose lab studies endogenous neuroprotective pathways in an effort to design safe and well tolerated therapeutics for the treatment of neurological injury.


Robert A. Mericle, MD, is an associate professor of Neurological Surgery, director of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery.

Anne O'Duffy, MD, is an active clinician and researcher who recently came to Vanderbilt after training at the Mayo Clinic and practicing in San Francisco. Dr. O’Duffy specializes in general neurology, migraine headaches and women's issues.

Robert Singer, M.D. interventinal neurosurgeon with expertise in cerebral aneurysms.

Reid C. Thompson, MD, is the Vice-Chair of Neurological Surgery and is an associate professor of Neurological Surgery and Vascular Surgery.

Jason R. Thurman, MD,  is an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, and has a strong interest in pre and in-hospital care of acute stroke. He is the principal investigator for the CLEAR trial.

Jackie Moreland, RN, BSN, MS, is the stroke coordinator, and has extensive experience in clinical neurosciences. She joined the Vanderbilt Stroke Center in 2007.

Diane Brown, RN, BSN, CCRP, is the Study/Research nurse coordinator. She worked as a neurology nurse for 11 years before joining Vanderbilt in 2000.

Valerie Sullinger, RN, is the Neurosurgery Study coordinator. She joined Vanderbilt in 2007.

Tonya Jarquin-Valdivia, RN, is a Clinical Stroke and Rehabilitation nurse with over 10 years of bedside clinical experience. She is at Stallworth Hospital and coordinates stroke patient care.

Nina Mitsky, RDMS, is a sonographer with expertise in neurosonology.
