Indication
Diagnosis of Diabetes Insipidus
Preparation
Nothing to eat or drink from 12AM, midnight
Procedure
1. Discuss result of laboratory work with prescribing physican to determine progression of deprivation
test.
2. Serum sodium, osmolarity and urine osmolarity STAT hourly.
3. Measure urine volume at hourly intervals.
4. It may be necessary to administer vasopressin 5 units subcutaneously during the test.
5. If administering vasopressin collect serum sodium, osmolarity and urine osmolarity every 30
minutes
6. Measure urine volume at 30 minute intervals.
7. Continue collection of serum sodium and urine osmolarity until physician orders the test to stop.
Interpretation
Result dependent on precise indication of deprivation test and physician’s preference.
