About Vanderbilt Orthopaedics

A message from our Chair, Dr. Herbert S. Schwartz

Welcome to the website of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  The Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute is comprised of devoted faculty, care-givers and researchers who are committed to dramatically improving patient health.  We offer a friendly environment of dedicated, compassionate people who care about patients and are passionate about helping them in many ways.

The Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute is the result of an intellectual environment that fosters inquiry, initiative, and collaboration within a culture of hard work and friendly interactions.  It is a fun place to work and at the end of each day all of us can say – we made a difference in at least one person’s life.

The Department is continually trying to improve itself.  We are restructuring our internal monitoring process to better our measure of quality and success.  We work closely with perioperative services to improve the efficiencies of surgery and patient flow.  We continue to grow by adding clinicians and scientists to further our pursuit of basic, translational and clinical research.  The ability to procure more grant funding is facilitating greater investigative and thematic discovery in research.  Our educational objectives remain an unwavering component of our academic mission.  As we grow nationally in reputation, we strive to maintain commitment to our community by engaging high school students and Nashvillians in educational and charity projects.  We are proud to be part of the Vanderbilt community, proud of our accomplishments and plans for the future.  Please come visit us, I know you will enjoy the experience.   - Herbert S. Schwartz, M.D.
