Braces and Appliances

Our goal is for you to have straight teeth, a good bite, and a beautiful smile. How do braces accomplish this? It's helpful to understand how braces work.

Over a period of time, the constant, gentle pressure of braces moves teeth into their proper positions. There are two parts to braces:

  • brackets which are placed directly on your teeth and
  • the archwire that connects them

We place a bracket (which is a piece of shaped metal or ceramic) on each tooth. You might think of this bracket as a handle— a way for us to control each tooth. Then we connect an archwire to each bracket. The wire runs through the brackets and provides the force necessary to move the teeth.
