Common Tests & Procedures
The following are common tests and procedures usually performed to diagnosis neurological disorders and conditions. Click on the links provided to learn more about each procedure.
Carotid Ultrasound
A carotid ultrasound can show your doctor if you have plaque buildup in your carotid arteries. Plaque buildup in your arteries can lead to blood clots and cause strokes. Read more about Carotid ultrasound.
EEG (Adult)
An electroencephalograph (EEG) test is used to diagnose if you're having seizures. The test is performed by an EEG technician in your doctor's office or in a hospital. This test is not uncomfortable or painful. Read more about Adult EEG.
EEG (Pediatric)
An electroencephalograph (EEG) test is a painless procedure used to detect abnormalities in brain activity. It is most often used to diagnose and monitor seizure disorders, sleep disorders and behavioral conditions. Read more about EEG and how if affects your child.
EMG
Electromyography (EMG) tests how healthy your muscles are. It also checks the nerves controlling the muscles. An EMG is used when people have symptoms of weakness. It helps to show muscle weakness or nerve dysfunction that is caused by neurologic disorders. Read more about EMG.
Evoked Potentials
Evoked potentials tests measure the electrical signals sent to the brain in response to a sensory stimulus. They are used to detect nerve disorders and conditions affecting the brain. Read more about Evoked Potentials.
Nerve Conduction Studies (Adult)
A nerve conduction velocity test (NCV) measures the speed of signals through a nerve. It is used to diagnose nerve or muscle problems. Read more about NCV.
Nerve Conduction Studies (Pediatric)
A nerve conduction velocity test (NCV) measures the speed of signals through a nerve. It is used to diagnose nerve or muscle problems. Your child’s doctor may order this test to look for nerve damage or for a number of diseases that can damage nerves. Read More about pediatric NCV.
Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (QSART)
A QSART is used to assess damage to the tiny nerve fibers that control sweating. It measures the amount of sweat produced in response to stimulation. Read more about QSART.
Transcranial Doppler
A Transcranial Doppler test is used to assess the bloodflow in the vessels of the brain. It is used to determine a person’s risk of stroke. Children with sickle cell disease often have this test. Read more about Transcranial Doppler.
