What's the Difference? BLS vs ALS

BLS Ambulances

BLS (basic life support) ambulances operate with two emergency medical technicians to deliver basic life support care to ill or injured patients.   A BLS ambulance carries various medical equipment on it.  It has many of the things that you would find in an emergency department at a hospital or on an ALS Ambulance.  A few of those items are a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), splints, cervical collars, back boards, a car seat for transporting children, and oxygen.

ALS Ambulances

ALS (advanced life support) ambulances operate with a paramedic and either another paramedic or EMT. These highly trained staff members deliver advanced life support care. An ALS ambulance carries various medical equipment on it.  It has many of the things that you would find in an emergency department at a hospital.  A few of those items are a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope, ECG monitor/manual defibrillator, IV's,  more then 25 life savings medications, splints, cervical collars, back boards, a car seat for transporting children, and oxygen. Paramedics deliver treatment and medications for patients with chest pain, trouble breathing, diabetic emergencies or taking care of trauma patients involved in any type of accident.  They deliver babies, start intravenous lines, place tubes into the trachea to assist with breathing and defibrillate a patient's heart back into a regular rhythm
