Common Vision Problems
MYOPIA (NEARSIGHTEDNESS) When the cornea is too sharply curved, or when the eye is too long, light rays focus in front of the retina and blur distant vision.
HYPEROPIA (FARSIGHTEDNESS) When the cornea is flatter than normal, or an eye is too short, light rays are focused at a point behind the retina. Without optical correction, the hyperopic eye sees a blurred image.
ASTIGMATISM When the cornea has different curvature in one meridian compared with another, the eye cannot focus at any distance. The normal eye is shaped like a basketball; an astigmatic eye is like a football. Astigmatism can sometimes cause ghosting or diplopia (a doubling effect). Astigmatism may accompany myopia or hyperopia.
PRESBYOPIA (Short Arm Syndrome) Almost everyone gets presbyopia. It's a natural part of aging. As you age, your lens loses elasticity, which causes you to lose the ability to focus sharply on near objects. With Laser vision correction, MonoVision is an option to allow you to see distance and near without correction. In Monovision: your dominant eye will fully corrected for distance while your other eye will be corrected for near. Please ask your physician if you would be a good candidate for this option.
