Frequently Asked Questions
What is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a form of refractive surgery that has been used in the U.S. since the early 1990’s. In this procedure, a thin surface layer of the cornea (called the “flap”) is first created and folded to side. This allows the surgeon to treat the underlying corneal bed with the excimer laser to reshape the cornea giving the eye the ability to refocus again and repair vision impairments.
Why is ALL Laser, Blade-Free LASIK different?
All Laser, Blade-Free LASIK uses the IntraLase laser, a highly specialized laser that creates the “flap” more dependably and safely than using a surgical blade, called a microkeratome, which is used in traditional LASIK surgery. The IntraLase laser uses extremely short bursts of light in the near infrared range achieving accuracy and safety that are unmatched by the standard means.
Will LASIK work for me?
People over the age of 18 who are in good health and wear glasses, contacts, or have blurred vision are eligible for LASIK. Vanderbilt offers free evaluations to determine if LASIK is right for you. Call us at 615.936.3536 to schedule a free consultation. Click here to learn if you are a candidate.
How safe is it?
Generally speaking, LASIK is a successful and safe procedure, producing few complications. As with any surgery, factors that affect results are the skill of the surgeon and the type of equipment used. At Vanderbilt LASIK, our experienced physicians use the safest and most advanced treatment technology available.
How long does it take?
The IntraLase/ CutomVue procedure is very quick – usually less than 10 minutes an eye. Both eyes are usually treated on the same day. Most patients notice an improvement in vision almost immediately.
What is the recovery time?
Following surgery, the healing is natural and usually quick. Similar to traditional LASIK, some patients have reported feeling eye irritation for a maximum of 48 hours. Most patients are able to drive themselves to the follow-up visit the next day and are able to return to work within 48 hours.
Is it painful?
No. Anesthetic drops will be used to numb your eyes. Most patients admit feeling more discomfort from the anticipation of the procedure than the actual LASIK surgery.
Will my vision remain stable?
It will take up to three months for your eyes to totally heal after laser treatment. During this time some patients may experience regression. A significant regression may require enhancement. Any enhancement during the first year after surgery is included in your original fee.
Will I still need reading glasses?
Laser treatment will NOT stop the natural aging process of your eyes. If you are over the age of 40 and you did not opt for monovision, you may need glasses for reading.
Is LASIK covered by insurance?
Currently, LASIK surgery is classified as a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not covered by insurance.
Fees for Vanderbilt LASIK are comparable to other providers.
What does the fee include?
The fee includes the treatment, as well as all pre-operative and post-operative appointments with the ophthalmologist who performed your surgery and enhancements performed over the next year.
