Am I a Candidate?

Are You A Good Candidate?

People over the age of 18 who wear glasses, contacts or have blurred vision are typically eligible for LASIK. Only a thorough examination will determine if All Laser LASIK surgery is right for you. At Vanderbilt LASIK, we want to be sure that each individual is an ideal candidate before recommending any procedure. This is an elective surgery and safety is our first consideration. It should also be yours.

FREE EVALUATIONS. Vanderbilt LASIK offers free initial evaluations so that we can tell you immediately if you are a good candidate. Call us at 615.936.3536 to schedule your free evaluation or come by our clinic Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Generally, you would be a good candidate for LASIK if:

  • You have had the same vision prescription for at least one year
  • You are at least 18 years of age
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have no conditions that would affect wound healing
  • Your hormones are not fluctuating due to a medical condition
  • You are not taking medications that may cause fluctuations in your vision
  • You have no history of eye diseases or the following conditions:
Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster (shingles) in the eye area
         Macular Degeneration
         Glaucoma or ocular hypertension
Cataracts (that have not been removed)
         Keratoconus

Other Risk Factors

Your surgeon at Vanderbilt LASIK will assure that all risks are considered before determining whether All Laser LASIK is right for you:
Large pupils can increase the possibility of glare, halos, starbursts and ghost images (double vision) after surgery.
A cornea that is too thin may not be stable enough to have LASIK.
Previous refractive surgery will be evaluated to weigh the benefits and risks of additional surgery with your individual situation in mind.
Dry eyes are often aggravated by LASIK surgery so our surgeons will advise patients who suffer from dry eyes on whether the procedure would be appropriate for them.
