Innocent Heart Murmurs (Benign Murmurs)

Innocent heart murmurs, or benign murmurs, are sounds that are made by the blood circulating through the heart's chambers and valves or through other blood vessels close to the heart. They are extremely common in children, but they are harmless. Innocent heart murmurs can come and go in children, but they typically disappear by adulthood. Once the doctor has determined that it is an innocent heart murmur and not one that could have complications, the child may resume their normal, active lifestyle. There is no need for medication, rehabilitation, or other treatment for innocent heart murmurs.
