Primary Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease
Primary prevention is the controlling of risk factors for heart disease before heart disease has developed.
Some risk factors for heart disease are beyond your control:
- Age - Men older than 45, women older than 55.
- Family history of heart disease, especially if it occurred before the age of 60.
However, other risk factors can be controlled or prevented:
- Cigarette smoking/tobacco use.
- High blood pressure.
- High cholesterol.
- Physical inactivity.
- Obesity.
- Diabetes.
It is important to assess your risk of heart disease and then talk with your doctor to help you develop a plan to reduce your risk.
What is your risk for heart disease? The American Heart Association’s Risk Assessment questionnaire can help you to estimate your risk of having a heart attack or dying of coronary heart disease in the next 10 years.
