Cardiopulmonary Testing (SV02)

Also called SV02, cardiopulmonary testing enables a physician to examine your heart, brain function, oxygen levels in your blood, lung function and determine your risk for stroke.

What does it tell the doctor?
From the test, the doctor can determine if exercise causes electrical changes in your heart. These changes will show on your electrocardiogram (ECG). This test will help your doctor determine the difference between potential heart and lung problems.

What happens before the test?
There are several instructions you should follow before having this test.

  • Get a good night's rest.
  • Take medicines with small sips of water unless directed not to by your doctor.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and comfortable shoes.
  • Do not wear pantyhose or overalls.
  • Do not eat or drink eight hours before the test.
  • Do not have caffeine 24 hours before your test, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks and Excedrin.
  • Do not smoke for at least three hours before the test.
  • Do not exercise before the test.

What will I experience?

You will walk on a treadmill and breathe through a special mouthpiece. Throughout the exercise your nose will be closed by a clip. Your chest will be connected to a heart monitor through electrode patches and wires. This will allow staff to frequently monitor your blood pressure and heart beat. If at any time during the testing you develop pain or tightness in your chest, dizziness or difficulty breathing, tell a staff member immediately.

You will exercise until you are unable to continue or until asked to stop. After you are done walking on the treadmill, you will be monitored until your heart rate returns to normal.

What happens after the test?

You will be allowed to return to the clinic or go home. Your test results will be given to you by telephone or at your next clinic appointment. There are no restrictions after your test unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
