Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndrome

Autoimmune diseases sometimes occur in clusters. Polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type 2 is a relatively rare condition in which autoimmune thyroid disease is associated with autoimmune adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease) and/or type 1 diabetes. Autoimmune thyroiditis can also occasionally be associated with other autoimmune diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, or celiac sprue disease.

In general, patients with one autoimmune disease have a slightly higher risk of having another autoimmune disease. There is another variety called Polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type I (APS1), also called autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) syndrome. This too is a rare autosomal recessive disorder in which females are affected slightly more frequently than males.
