Adrenal Disease

People with Type 1 Diabetes have a higher chance of developing underactive adrenal glands. The adrenal glands lie directly above the kidneys. They also make several hormones, including some that help regulate blood pressure and help our bodies deal with physical stress and injury.

The immune system can sometimes begin to mistake the adrenal glands for germs. This is the same problem that happens in the pancreas to cause Type 1 Diabetes.  People with Type 1 Diabetes who experience persistent dizziness upon standing, lack of appetite, unexplained weight loss, darkening of the skin, or other concerning symptoms should contact their doctor. Adrenal disease is not a common disorder but can become life-threatening if not recognized and treated.

Did you know

that only an approximate 14 million people with diabetes have actually been diagnosed by a physician. The rest don't know they have it.
