Steroid Induced Diabetes

Steroids are medications used for many different medical disorders. They control swelling and inflammation and can be used in organ transplants.

Side effects of steroids include causing diabetes and worsening preexisting diabetes. These medications cause increased glucose production from the liver. Also, the body might not respond to insulin. Many patients with preexisting diabetes need higher doses of insulin or other medications to control blood sugar levels when using steroids.

It is important to monitor blood sugar levels often when taking steroids for any reason.
