Charles (aka Chaz) Hong received his BS in Biology from MIT, before earning his MD and PhD with High Honors in Genetics from Yale. He received training in Internal Medicine at Yale and Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. After a stint on the Harvard Medical School faculty, Dr. Hong came to Vanderbilt in 2006. Inspired by classical forward genetic screens, his research centers around chemical genetic analysis of vertebrate development and physiology. Another major goal is to use small molecule modulators of development to help harness the therapeutic and discovery potential of pluripotent stem cells. A third major goal of the lab is to translate basic chemical biological discoveries into therapeutic leads for heart failure, atherosclerosis, cancer, heterotopic ossification, and anemia. His clinical interests include inherited heart diseases, like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Although he spent over 20 years in the Red Sox territory, Chaz remains a steadfast Detroit Tigers fan.
